About the Virginia Sexual & Domestic Violence Action Alliance
The Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance is Virginia’s leading voice on sexual and intimate partner violence.
We are a non-profit network of survivors, Sexual and Domestic Violence Agencies, and allies working to strengthen how communities across Virginia respond to and prevent sexual and intimate partner violence.
How we crafted this guide
Taking what we have heard from staff at local programs through trainings and technical assistance, ReStoryation, listening sessions from other Action Alliance projects, speaking to community stakeholders, and researching best practices from and beyond the field, we have created this guide as a tool to increase understanding of what family-friendly policies can look like in practice. We also created this tool for exploration for what we can make possible when we continue to value the wholeness of ourselves and others.
Most, if not all, of the policies we have recommended have an associated cost to their implementation, however we hope this guide serves as an entry point. We encourage you to start by doing an internal policy scan of your organization and see if there are any opportunities to move towards a more family-friendly workplace. There are steps you can take that are low-cost or free (i.e., including salary ranges on job postings or making your recruitment practices more equitable) that can work towards challenging the inequities that exist at structural and policy levels.
